I wholeheartedly agree with the need for a better case; while the stock leather case isn't bad, I don't trust it to protect my REX if I were to stick it into my pants pocket, for example. My first idea was to look for one of those brass business card cases; most are just a bit too thin, but I found some today (designed to hold a credit-card-sized calculator) that were the right size. The problems were: the case looked kind of gaudy and tacky in comparison to the cool black metal construction of the REX; and $40 seemed to be a lot to pay for something to protect a $150 organizer. While some kind of hard/stiff leather case would still be great, I'm currently looking for a cheap hard plastic PCMCIA protective case (as mentioned in a REX review I read somewhere on the net) -- anyone have one to spare? :) Re: a pager-type belt clip case -- I saw something that might fit the bill; it's a leather pocket with a belt clip attached such that the pocket is vertical (i.e. the short end is open). The leather is soft (well, like the leather in the stock case) so there's not much protection, but it might be sufficient if you're not going to subject it to much abuse.

Love my Rex! Yes, a calculator function would be nice...and a touch-tone dialer perhaps...heck why not integrate it into a cell phone while I'm asking. But what I could really use in the short term is a better container. I'd like to see a pager-style belt-clip carrying case for the Rex. If anyone finds one that works well, I'd love to hear about it. ---todd at hq dot net

This is a follow up comment to my notes from 10/23: I received a call from the REX product manager, Bruce Mendel regarding my Schedule+ importing problem and he helped me find a solution. Thanks to Bruce for his quick response. Ken

Tom Scheer <tscheer at ioc dot net> -- 10/24/97 -- 10:01:16

Can the Rex operating system be electronically updated? That would be nice in the event that fixes/improvements are made in the operating system.

bob melville <rcm at research dot bell-labs dot com> -- 10/23/97 -- 20:13:40

An obvious question: can I write custom apps? I have something in mind for which the REX would be the perfect platform -- I would buy one today if I could program it; otherwise, I will just stick with my Pilot ...

Ken Rempert <krempert at ti dot com> -- 10/23/97 -- 17:51:37

HELP! I received my REX on 1 Oct and this is a great organizer, except one big problem. I cannot import my Schedule+ 7.0a (.SCD) calendar files into the TrueSync software. I read the readme file and launched/logged on to Schedule+ and have been unsuccessfull repeatedly. I have called everyday since the beginning of October and no one including their Tech Support Manager, Wayne Hinkston is able to solve this problem. Can anyone help? Thanks, Ken Rempert 972-995-3889

Nice page! It's great to see the community already forming, and your comments and suggestions are very much appreciated. We're shipping as fast as we can to meet demand, and currently, you can find REX at Sharper Image, J&R, Circuit City, and next week, we're shipping to office and computer superstores. Thanks for being so enthusiastic. Bruce

Eugene Lin <elin at microsoft dot com> -- 10/22/97 -- 15:13:56

The Sharper Image is selling the REX-3 with the docking station together for $179. They don't sell any other configs. I haven't seen it in stock anywhere else. Be careful installing the batteries. Those little plastic doors are fragile. I bought one and it's great. My only gripe: The Truesync software locks when I try to import my calendar from my Outlook server file. I have to export it to a .PST and change my MAPI settings to point to the local file to make it work. Even then, it loses all appointment location info in the import. I will take a close look at the TrueSync 98 sw when it becomes available so I can sync directly, but I'd be amazed if it actually worked as advertised. I waited three years for Apple to do it right with the Newton OS 2.0 and gave up.

There is now a page with REX screen shots at http://www.linkmagnet.com/rex/rex_screens.html -- or you can get to it via the main page.

Andy <mccann at hotmail dot com> -- 10/21/97 -- 19:50:35

Hey, great screen shots of the desktop software on your page! That really helps in deciding whether to get the REX or not. Now all you need are some screen shots of the REX screen itself. I'm still leaning toward getting one, but I feel that a key thing missing is the ability to alter or manipulate the data on the REX itself; if that were possible, it would be a killer product. (Oh yeah, and how about a built-in chess game?) Anyway, now I've got to go to an electronics store and actually get my hands on one these things and try it out.

Roy wrote: "REX already supports "notes" attached to events. In the REX TrueSync Information Manager, when you edit an event, you'll notice a "notes" tab ..." Thanks Roy... I stand corrected. I'm not sure how I missed that. Now I am even more thrilled about the REX! Now if the next version could have a calculator, I will be set. Paul Stauffer pks at monumental dot com

Marty Schiffenbauer <mechel at iname dot com> -- 10/21/97 -- 09:45:28

Is there any way to get the REX to work with Windows 3.1? If not, will there be Win 3.1 software for the REX in the near future?

Roy Feague <rfeague at starfish dot com> -- 10/20/97 -- 18:36:01

Hi Paul - REX already supports "notes" attached to events. In the REX TrueSync Information Manager, when you edit an event, you'll notice a "notes" tab where you can enter arbitrary text. When you view select an individual event on the REX to view the details, you'll see the notes. Thanks for the suggestions; stay tuned! -Roy

Nina Yuan <nhy at panix dot com> -- 10/20/97 -- 18:17:54

Roy, any chance at all of a DOS-based version of TrueSync? If I could get my REX to talk to my HP200LX, it would be nearly perfect for my needs (if it could convert directly from the HP phone/calendar formats, it would be perfect, but I'm trying not to be too greedy...) Thanks! P.S. Considering you only had five buttons to work with, the user interface is really very good.

Paul Stauffer <pks at monumental dot com> -- 10/20/97 -- 13:49:09

The REX is awesome, but I suggest the following improvements in the next software update: 1) Support synchronization of text attachments to scheduled meetings, which the desktop software displays. 2) Needs a calculator 3) Should support synchronization of checked-off todo items from the REX card. Paul Stauffer

Roy Feague <rfeague at starfish dot com> -- 10/20/97 -- 12:17:44

Hi All - Great Page! Tom asked about synchronizing directly with other PIMs; check the starfish web site for information on a new product coming out called TrueSync 98 for REX: http://www.starfish.com/products/truesync/ts98rex.html This will allow you to synchronize from a variety of PIMs directly. Thanks for all the feedback; it's great to hear such a positive reception! -Roy

DavidG <gottlieb at villagenet dot com> -- 10/19/97 -- 16:47:32

J&R Computer World, the huge NYC computer retailer and mail order house announced that "REX Is Here" in today's full page ad in the New York Times.

Larry Yu <yuml at netvigator dot com> -- 10/17/97 -- 07:30:02

Where to buy it from Hong Kong? It is so small that it cannot be updated but it is possible to plug into my HP200LX PCMCIA card slot and update by DOS applications?

David <symphony(at)dircon(dot)co(dot)uk> -- 10/16/97 -- 02:56:30

Does anyone have any information concerning availability in the UK? Alternatively, does anyone know if it is possible to import one from the US, and what the best store to order from is? Thanks, David

T.H. <ting at shore dot net> -- 10/15/97 -- 15:33:00

Check out the stock price of Franklin (symbol FEP): http://quote.yahoo.com/quote?symbols=fep&detailed=f FEP paid off my REX3. I wish I could just shovel money into Starfish Software, but unfortuantly, Starfish is private.

tom scheer <tscheer at ioc-nospam- dot net> -- 10/14/97 -- 09:40:23

I see comments here about Outlook 97. Will the Rex synchronize directly with Outlook, or must I import Outlook into the Rex PIM software? And I 2nd the suggestion some have made: WinCE synch software would be great.

Rich Shelton <shelt at mail2 dot nai dot net> -- 10/14/97 -- 05:50:18

I used a Pilot but found it a bit redundant next to my laptop. The REX is just what a mobile laptop user needs -- quick access to phone numbers and appointments without booting up. My only dissatisfaction so far is that it does take a lot of button pushing to get to a specific phone number, but overall the portability factor is fantastic!

Scott Friedberg <friedberg at usa dot net> -- 10/13/97 -- 22:57:08

Did any of you have PalmPilots before your REX? If so, are you ditching them or have you achieved some sort of expensive harmony?

Alan Henrik <henrik at linkmagnet dot com> -- 10/13/97 -- 21:01:09

So far REX is fantastic! Thought I had found a bug, being unable to set the city for world time, but this went away after the first synchronization. Nice packaging. Batteries are included, and there are easy setup instructions. After synching in the included list of every airline phone number in the known universe, my REX still has 225k free out of 256k! And that's before I perform surgery on the airline phone number list. The alarm is good for reminders, even though it might not wake me up on a Sunday morning. The interface is very thoughtfully implemented. There's even a password feature and a 'please return to' screen. It's fun to see people's eyes light up when you show them REX. The most amazing thing is the size. Suggested addition for future versions: a keyring! :-)

Skip La Fetra <slafetra at rgv dot hp dot com> -- 10/12/97 -- 12:33:08

I already appreciate my REX quite a bit! Definitely a design home-run. I'd love to see a Windows CE version of the support software. Also, I've noticed two problems with the support software: 1) There is a well-known problem that importing a calendar from Outlook seems to hang forever. 2) Importing a calendar from Schedule+ does not seem to include repeating appointments -- the first instance of the appointment is the only one which makes it into the REX card.

Philippe Kahn <philippe at starfish dot com> -- 10/12/97 -- 11:59:53

Creating this site is such a nice idea! Our job is to make this REX and future releases as useful a possible. We look forward to your feedback! All the best -Philippe-

Skip La Fetra <slafetra at hp dot com> -- 10/11/97 -- 09:19:25

Well, I got mine (web purchase, arrived at my house this week). Neat gadget. 2 problems -- Importing calander data from Schedule+ (ver 7.0a) does not bring repeating appointments -- only the 1st instance of each repeating appointment. And the well-known problem with Outlook 97 (it freezes when loading the calander). Finally, a suggestion for future product improvement -- a Windows CE version of the host software. Then you can easily export a calander from a WinCE machine into the REX card. Awesome!

Rich Shelton <shelt at mail2 dot nai dot net> -- 10/11/97 -- 05:39:00

I ordered mine from Franklin on Monday, 10/6. Yhey said it was in stock and would ship by Wed 10/8. I called back on Thursday 10/9 and they said it wouldn't ship for at least 2 weeks because they're out of stock! Not very organized for a company selling organizers!! I'm now looking around in stores...

Alan Henrik <henrik at linkmagnet dot com> -- 10/11/97 -- 00:03:07

REX is finally in stores! I got mine at The Sharper Image. They said they got them in last Friday, and they have been going fast. More info soon.
