Has anyone seen this new sharp handheld? It is a Sharp
Wizard in a new form factor (Dimensions: 2.7x4.3x0.5", 3.9
ounces) . I wonder if it can use standard Wizard addins?
RadioShack.com has them on sale for $69.99 with a $20.00
rebate. For $50.00, I might have to check one out myself.

Hello. I recently purchased a few hundred brand new Rex
6000's in bulk from overseas. They are garenteed and come
with the case and stylus only. The software can be
downloaded for free and the USB Docking cradle can be bought
on ebay for 11.00. I'm selling them for 135.00 each. I am a
6000 user myself and know they are almost impossible to find
except for on Ebay which they are selling for up to 235.00
each. My email address is teamtuna@mail.com

Windows XP Code 10: Cannot start device.

I finally resolved this issue for myself on Windows XP...

The problem is not with the drivers, it is with the
resources used by the drivers. After you have successfully
reinstalled the old PCMCIA Modem driver for your REX 6000,
try setting resources for the driver manually. Click the
"Resources" tab in the Properties for the modem under Device
Manager. Keep trying different configurations "Basic
Configuration 0000", "0001", "0002", etc. until you find one
that makes the Code 10 Warning go away.

Good luck!

Tony

Thanks for the info. I have a account with Yahoo and use to
sync it with turesync as a backup to truesync.com. In Sep I
was notified that they are discontinuing service to
truesync. After your note I again check and found this:

Effective September 15, 2002, TrueSync for Yahoo! will no
longer be offered as a download for use with Yahoo! Address
Book or Yahoo! Calendar.
If you would like information about using TrueSync Plus with
another web-based PIM, please email:

support@starfish.com

for more information.

Also, you can still get Intellisync for Yahoo! in the
options area of your Yahoo! Calendar or Yahoo! Address Book.

Please visit Intellisync for Yahoo! for more information

Is there a way to make Yahoo work with a REx that Iam
missing. Again Thanks for any help.

Hello,
I just received that $20 rebate check from Xircom I had
asked about a few days ago.

You all have happy and safe Holidays!

GPF <qaplus at hotmail dot com> -- 12/04/02 -- 09:13:07

kal564, you can try my.yahoo.com. Its calendar and address
book can sync with REX and outlook. Actually you can
download a Truesync Plus from there for free.

kal564 <kloving at usa dot net> -- 12/03/02 -- 20:31:58

I have been using the rex 5001 for yrs alone with the
truesync.com calender. The syncing worked great using
truesync plus software. I was notified today that the
truesync.com calendar is going away later this month. Does
anyone know of a online calender that will work with the rex
5000 pda? Yahoo online calender use to but no longer will.
Any suggestions. Thanks

I got my $20 this morning (Tue. 3 Dec. 2002), heading says:
"Xircom, an Intel Company" and "Full and Final Settlement".
None of us have heard about anything that would require a
settlement, have we? This rebate is something that came out
of the blue to all we "Rexers" suprise. But they call it a
"Full and Final Settlement". My check is dated 11/11/2002
and is void after 02/09/2003. I wasn't sure if I'd get
a check, because I had a 'confusing senario' and thought
mine would be processed last, if ever. I originally had a
problem with my REX, and it had been replaced. I couldn't
remember if I'd synced both of them with the REX site, or
only the first one. I sent in the serial number for each
and hoped for the best. Glad they figured it out. I only
got one check, not 2. But 1 is better than none.
Happy REXin everybody! madigan@bellsouth.net

Chrashing <Chrashing at juno dot com> -- 12/03/02 -- 10:21:37

Hello Die-Hard REX fans,

I mailed the rebate back in 9/26/02. No word back and worst
no money back. Anyone getting any?

Skip <Skip at LaFetra dot com> -- 12/02/02 -- 22:13:24

Tom:

I suspect that you saw my notes in REX6000.org about the Rex
5000 under Windows XP (I am the "Skip" who originally sent
this information to Dana). Unfortunately, I haven't seen
your problem about "running out of memory".

However, (fortunately?) I have had many cases of
something-wrong-with-the-data -- especially with using the
Rex 5000 with my Jornada 720 PDA -- which finally caused me
to move off of the 5000 and on to the REX 6000.

You may wish to try putting together a "clean" (built from
scratch) set of information -- my guess is that it will
transfer to the 5000 without problem. Then comes the real
problem of finding the "bad" entry (or entries) which is
causing your download to fail. Good luck -- it is a toughie
but if you get through it all should be well.

Tom <tpfremote at yahoo dot com dot au> -- 12/02/02 -- 14:21:54

Further to yesterday's post, I found some excellent
instructions on setting up the Rex 5000 in Windows XP at
www.rex6000.org/Content/rex-os.htm. This helped me to get
the Rex working and TrueSync talking to it.

However, my second problem still exists. When I was
synchronising Outlook 2000 with TrueSync I got an error
message:

TruesyncRE-E0001:Rex Pro has run out of memory and can not
fit amy more records, or the connection to it has been lost.
Although it said 43 records had been added (I had over 2000
previously) there were none in the Rex when I looked.

Any suggestions? Maybe if I tried running TrueSync in
compatibility mode (this was also suggested in the rex6000
page).

yiming <yiming at iname dot com> -- 12/02/02 -- 09:06:43

hi Beth,

you can find info on how to get rex6000 to work under winNT
and win xp environment at Dana's www.rex6000.org

Tom <tpfremote at yahoo dot com dot au> -- 12/01/02 -- 22:25:10

Can anyone help me with getting my REx 5000 Pro to work with
Outlook 2000 under Windows XP Pro? It previously worked with
Outlook 2000 under Win 98 SE but when I upgraded (no choice
in the matter) I encountered two problems:

1. Windows did not see the Rex in the PC Card slot. I
downloaded the Win 2000 fix and the Rex is now recognised.

2. However, when I start Truesync it keeps telling me the
available memory in the Rex is low and may not fit all the
information (it all fitted previously). There is an "ignore"
button on the warning window but it is greyed out so the
only choice is to cancel the synchronisation.

It's very frustrating.

Beth <schaefer at xvi dot net> -- 12/01/02 -- 18:49:27

Hi everyone: I just bought a new REX 6000 off of e-bay, and
delivered via UPS 2nd day delivery, I paid a total of
$170(still wrapped in the manufacturer's shrink wrap). I
don't have it yet, but I can't wait to get my hands on the
little guy....

Has anyone used a REX in a Windows NT environment? Does it
synch well? I have Windows XP at home, but Windows NT at
work. Something tells me I'm in for some surprises!

Thanks.
Beth

GPF <qaplus at hotmail dot com> -- 12/01/02 -- 18:27:14

USD700!! For that price I can buy a iPaq with 400M CPU, 128M
RAM, built-in bluetooth and transflective bright screen. :)

Bertus <bertusrex at hotmail dot com> -- 12/01/02 -- 03:17:11

An interesting creditcard-size PDA running Linux at:

http://www.invair.de/english.html

Although it's claimed to be creditcard-sized, its almost 2
cm thick... Still it runs at 133mhz and has 32MB of RAM. The
price is slightly higher than for a Rex: roughly USD 700
IIRC.

The device has got a USB connector, which might make it
possible to connect a keyboard or other USB devices that
have Linux support.

You are right, Otavio. It is a little thicker, though the

I think I would buy one, if they were available in the US

Otavio Guzzi <otavioguzzi at imagelink dot com dot br> -- 11/25/02 -- 16:53:32

Yeah Joe,
but the fact is...

It is not the form factor, PC CARD, as REX, so it's BIGGER!

Franco <franco_duina at hotmail dot com> -- 11/25/02 -- 16:02:41

I went with my motorbike, September and October, touring
Spain and Portugal. The third day I dropped my Rex, tripped,
stomped on it, goodbye Rex.

Now I'm back (by the way, Dana, I found the plastic case
that you imported for us from Japan, thanks), I got myself
an other Rex, come here to check all the wonderful news for
the last 3 months, and nobody is here, there are almost no
news. Zero. Zilch. Nada.

...and I was so happy to be back in the Rex community, that
in the past was so alive and wonderful and full of zest...

Looks like Chicken Little has been visiting Rex Rumor
Central.

B(2) <b2 at 2b-not-b dot com> -- 11/25/02 -- 00:03:37

Good question Antmelnat.

When Alan Henrik said he was going to take the forum down
soon (in the next few days) on October 3 - I think we all
just stopped posting here, expecting the end to come at any
moment. I guess whatever action remains is at The Rex Zone
or on the e-mail lists. I occasionally check both to see if
the REX 7 has been released. ;^)

About seven weeks later, RRC is still up and running, though
few of us post here anymore. And B(2) is beginning to
wonder if it was all a little joke on someone's part. Has
anyone contact the sysop by other means and confirmed this
"ultimate rumor" was true?

And, am I the only one who noticed the recent posts from
"PH"? Remember "Ph" and his impersonations? Hmmmmmm.

Was the 10/3 post yet another cruel attempt to thwart the
RRC crowd, or a legitimate message from the real sysop? I
guess it might be worth checking the IP hash in the source,
but I don't have the energy to go back and check it against
his IP hash back when he first instituted that feature. I
think it might have been spring of 2001. (The logging of
the IP hash in the source was intended to thwart the
impersonation antics of "Ph" as I recall.)

We are truly an apathetic bunch these days. We all have our
little stashes of REX cards and we wait for the day a new
release of Outlook or Windows breaks the synch software -
knowing that will be the end of the REX. Maybe I'll go over
to Linux at that point and start synching that way. Might
be worth it.

B(2)

antmelnat <antmelnat at yahoo dot com> -- 11/24/02 -- 16:25:01

Just testing to see if RRC is still working. No posts for
some time...where is everyone?

It looks like Novatek http://www.novatek.fr/novatek_an/
is an OEM made by them
and they have a colour version with really amazing specs
(mp3 player,CF expansion card, handwright Rec etc)!!!!

If you check also the OS manufacturer http://www.penbex.com/
they have already a lot of addins and an SDK for developers

I couldn't find a price for the top model but the cheapest
model( Novatek is 99 Euros) is dirt cheap ....

Dan Gulley <dgulley at nccw dot net> -- 11/11/02 -- 20:09:10

Alan,
I made a request to the Internet Archive to save this site
one more time before you close it for good. You probably
know of them, but their address is http://www.archive.org/
and they have a mission of archiving as much of the internet
as possible for historical purposes. I go to their site
when I can no longer find a site and about 50% of the time I
can find the page I'm looking for archived there. Please
keep the REX site open at least until they have archived it
(if they will do it). I, of course, have no inside control
over them. But, maybe if enough of us ask them, they will
make a special effort to archive it one last time before you
close it. The last time they archived it was 10-30-2001.
I found your REX site about 6 months ago when I bought a REX
6000. I have since become dependant on the little buggar
and have lurked at this site several times a month
(sometimes a week) since then. I even bought a second REX
as insurance against having to be without one in the near
future.

Thanks for the upkeep of the site and the very best wishes
to you for the future.

Alan:

http://www.rex6000.org/Content/rex-updates.htm

...If you use the BIN file here to reload the firmware to
your 1 MB REX, the memory display will then read 2 MB. This
doesn't mean that your REX now has more memory, just that
the firmware update changes the memory display to 2 MB. To
determine the amount of memory on your REX, tap "Controls"
and then tap "Memory." See here in our REX FAQ for more
information. We have not heard of any problems related to
running the firmware file here on a 1 MB REX.

Alan <afine99 at juno dot com> -- 11/09/02 -- 05:07:47

I recently found and purchased a Rex 6000 unit in Asia. To
my surprise the unit indicated that it only had 1 MB Flash

unit really have? Thanks.

yiming <qc2000 at yahoo dot com> -- 11/08/02 -- 09:45:39

Another proposal from Mr. House. I don't think he'll
consider breaking it up into smaller packages, such as 100.

Hi Greg,
I have a proposal that may help. Rather than taking all 2000
units at once, take 1000 units at USD 60/unit and I will
hold the other 1000 units for one month at USD46/unit.
That represents a USD1.00/unit increase in price but up
front you only require USD60,000 rather than USD104,000.
Let me know what you think.

Contact me at greg_searle at hotmail dot com with any leads.

Game goal is to arrange balls of the same color in a
straight lines (every direction). 5 or more balls on a
straight line are removed and points are given. Longer lines
give more points to you. Crossing lines count together. Hope
that helps.

Junior:

Try www.starfish.com and www.truesync.com and www.mot.com
for starters.

I looked on starfish.com and did not see the v70 phone
specifically listed, but if Motorola says it is supported
and provides connectivity, then surely Starfish (a
subsidiary of Motorola) will support you.

Every Motorola phone has a toll free telephone number on it
under the battery or in the documentation and you can easily
reach a real person at that number who will go to the ends
of the earth to assist you. At least that has been my
experience. Give them a call.

Best of luck,

B(2)

Greg Searle <greg_searle at hotmail dot com> -- 10/09/02 -- 06:20:48

It's getting harder and harder to find a REX 6000 for sale
these days. I just replaced the eBay logo on my page with a
few links for REX 6000 sources. These sites list vendors
who probably still have them in stock. As I find more of
these lists, I will add more links. Avoid Amazon.com for
now, as the vendors there are taking advantage of the
shortage in supply.

Hi Alan,

thank you very much for providing this forum to the Rex
community. Since I discovered it I highly appreciated this
source of information. If it wasn't for this forum I would
have trashed my Rex shortly after I bought it.
As far as I know it's the only forum of this quality around.
At least there is nothing as informative, educative and
(sometimes) entertaining in my main language (german).
Alan, you surely have written a small part of computer
history - at least for me.

Alan;

I was already having kind of a bad day and your announcement
about taking RRC off the air made it a lot worse! I intend
that only as a great compliment, and not with any bitterness
or purpose of asking you to change your mind. I have
absolutely loved this forum; it is the break I take when I'm
swamped with work and the reward I give myself when I've
finished a task. But, I know how it is to have way too much
to do, and I'm sure this has taken a lot of your time. Good
for you for recognizing that in life some things have to go,
and making the tough decision. REX will live on, in large
part because of the energy you've given it. Thanks so much
for all you've done and best wishes for success in your
other endeavors.

B(2) <b2 at 2b-not-b dot com> -- 10/04/02 -- 00:35:36

Alan:

Thanks for all your time and effort maintaining this forum.

While we all owe a debt of gratitude to those who've already
developed alternative forums including the very useful Rex
Zone, nothing will ever have the elegant simplicity and
unique personality of this forum.

It has truly been one of my absolute favorites on the Net in
the last five or so years and it is one of a kind.

I believe the unthreaded format always drove the open
discussion here and that led to the current cult-like
devotion of so many of us to the REX. REX Rumor Central
MADE the REX work as a niche device when Citizen, Franklin,
Starfish, Xircom and Intel could not make the product work
as a viable PDA.

I certainly should have realized that you had expenses and
effort associated with running the site, but it really never
occurred to me. I guess I was vaguely aware the domain
registration renewals had to be paid and the periodic
archiving of the contents of this page must have been taken
some time, but the scope of the work involved never occurred
to me.

It would also be my hope that the RRC archives can also be
permanently hosted somewhere like www.rex6000.org, that
Dana's idea of a pointer or link from here to another
replacement forum can be realized and kept in place, and
(really dreaming) my fondest hope would be that the
unthreaded look and feel of this forum could be recreated
somewhere else.

Thanks again for your fine contribution to the REX
community. I'm not the only one who is going to really miss
this place.

Best wishes,

B(2)

Bertus <bertusrex-hotmail_com> -- 10/03/02 -- 23:29:11

Alan: Thanks for keeping RRC in the air for such a long
time. I think Dana's suggestion to move discussions to the
Rex Zone msgboard is Ok. If I remember correctly there is a
RRC archive at the rex.mamy.to website, but it's always good
to have a (downloadable) copy at e.g. www.rex6000.org.

regards,
Bertus

dana white <danabw at hotmail dot com> -- 10/03/02 -- 23:13:01

Alan:

First - thanks. I was so pleased when I found this board
after I got my first REX 3 when they were released. Saved
me from a bunch of trouble over the years and several REX
models.

Second - there's a lot of info on this site in the archived
pages. It would be great to keep that info available to the
REX community. Are you willing to pass the RRC archives on
so that we can keep them online?

Third - thanks. :-)

Fourth - The REX Zone at:

http://www.michiganwideweb.com/cgi-local/ib3/ikonboard.cgi

is a good alternative to if/when RRC shuts down. If it goes
that way it would be useful to have a redirect or pointer to
that site.

I don't think any of us have ever made any money off the REX
(neiter us hobbyists or Franklin/Xircom/Intel). Thanks for
sticking it out as long as you have.

Dana

Alan Henrik <none at none dot none> -- 10/03/02 -- 14:27:13

Just to let everyone know, I've decided to shut the REX Page
down in the next few days.

REX Rumor Central has been a great discussion forum for an
interesting product, and the best part about it has been the
dedicated contributions of the users. You have taken a
simple, unsophisticated web page and made it valuable by the
quality of your contributions.

However, the web site has never paid for itself, and it has
been a long time since I personally had a working REX. And
obviously several parts of the site are severely out of
date. Even if I did have a REX, this site would still be an
expensive hobby, and would take a lot of maintenance time to
keep up to date.

One option is to just shut down the site immediately, but I
figured it would be nice to offer you all a chance to talk
amongst yourselves for a few days first. I'm not looking to
extend the life of the site, but am basically looking to
avoid sinking more money or time into it. If anyone wants to
buy the entire site and help me recoup some of my past
expenses, that would be great, but it's probably too much to
hope for, and it's not my goal. My goal is just to remove it
from my task list, with a gentle transition to something
else.

Rather than participate in a vigorous discussion on this,
I'm likely to just check in after a couple days or so and
read what people have written. I'm not trying to be rude,
I'm just pretty busy with other things right now, but I do
need to simplify my life which includes getting the REX
Pages off my plate. Hope you will all understand this.

Please note one important point: I am not looking for free
hosting, or cheaper hosting. If that was the goal, I already
have it elsewhere (my own home broadband connection; I could
host at no additional cost). I'm just looking to simplify.

I know some of you have appreciated this forum a lot, and
the expressions of appreciation have helped keep it alive --
but that's not what I'm looking for now. What would be great
to see would be a migration of users from this site to
another forum site, hopefully one as open and free and as
high quality as you users have made this one to be, so you
people aren't left in the lurch. Good luck!

Alan

Hello all,

I was hoping that any of you experienced users might be able
to help me with a problem.
I'm having difficulty getting outlook XP to act as the PIM
for my REX 6000. I'm using the PCMCIA connection. Install
works fine, but when it comes to selecting MS Outlook as the
Translator when configuring in v.1.0, I am unable to map the
outlook file it says the "database file is missing or set to
zero" and the default area is grayed out, yet when trying to
locate the file (by browsing) no files show up to map. In
v.1.01, when I select Outlook as the translator, I
immediately get an "error report" message.

I've researched quite a bit and have not seen a solution to
this, and I've read that Outlook XP works with PCMCIA. I
know I must be missing something simple, because I initially
got synching on my old computer (when I first got the REX)
using Outlook XP. [First time using it on the new computer
and this is the problem I'm having].

Thanks in advance for your help.

Greg Searle <greg_searle at hotmail dot com> -- 10/02/02 -- 09:09:45

Ammar - It would take a lot of patience, care, a tiny
soldering iron, a solder wick, and a heat sink. With so
many connections, it would be easy to overheat many of the
components on the board. The solder connections look simple
-- there are just a lot of them.
